Further Research: Nate Berkus
Nate Berkus was born in Orange County, California in 1971. He studied at Lake Forest College and in 1994 he graduated from school with degrees in French and Sociology. " After college, Berkus founded his interior design firm, Nate Berkus Associates, at 24 in Chicago in 1995. The firm works on high-end residential and commercial projects worldwide and is known for 'timeless and deeply personal' spaces that 'tell your story'." (architecture lab, 2024). I will be analyzing Hancock Park design by Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent.
Hancock Park is a family house which renovated from 1928 Spanish Colonial. Originally, the house was built and designed as a Tudor-Style home which is comprised of small, dark rooms in 1925. In 2019, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent redesigned the house with protecting historical and antique view of the house. ''Berkus and Brent focused on restoring and preserving the home’s original Spanish Colonial elements, including the antique French mantels, Spanish marble floors, iron and glass doors, and vintage lanterns, which helped unearth the property’s historic 1920s roots.'' (architecture lab, 2024).
In this design they used only three colors and tones to give fresh and clean look. There is not so much furniture and decoration accessories around home. Both simple and elegant. One of the most distinctive feature of the house is that the furniture, walls and the flooring in the rooms is simple and similar colors and tones. The absence of unnecessary decorations and accessories that would tire the eyes has given the house a tidy and spacious atmosphere. “We go for a very clean, masculine look. We don’t like to live with a lot of color,” Brent says. “Or any!” Berkus swiftly chimes in. As for what constitutes clean and masculine in this context, the designers layered the house with rustic French, Swedish, and American furnishings of wood and stone, juxtaposed with more tailored Continental pieces by the likes of Jacques Adnet, Maria Pergay, Angelo Mangiarotti, and Afra and Tobia Scarpa.'' (Jeremiah Brent, 2025)
