Materials and Sustainability

Oak is an eco-friendly, environmental and sustainable material to use in buildings and furniture. Texture and natural colour of the oak wood gives a beautiful appearance. Also it is a natural source that we can find in almost everywhere because oak frames made from hardwood trees. Additionally, oak is a very strong and long-term product and this means oak also minimizes the waste. Oak is a naturally durable timber with a natural resistance to both insect attack and rot, making it almost maintenance free
( English Oak Buildings).

I want to use mostly natural and local sources as much as possible.  I am thinking to use this oak material for window seat table. I want to use this material because I am going to put this table in front of the windows and I want simple and chic look from outside. It has also good texture and appearance and it will fit the overall café atmosphere.

Other natural material that I want to use in my project is rattan. Rapid growth rate one the most important feature that rattan material have. 2-3 cm growth per day is shows that it is a better material option for furniture and decoration rather than other hardwoods. Other benefits for using rattan as a material are; minimal land use, biodegradable, low environmental impact which this helps to reduce carbon footprint. Also it has social and economical benefits for people and harvesting benefits for environment. Rattan also grows in harsh conditions, such as in floodwater, that would usually make land unusable. ( Dovetail Interiors,2019 )
For all these benefits rattan is an eco-friendly and sustainable material. All these positives encourage people to use more rattan in their house, office and restaurants. Moreover, it has good looking with in natural way and  fits perfect with organic and natural design.

Especially in the lightnings rattan looks amazing. When natural look combines with lightning it reflects the beauty of the material and shows the detail in design. Rattan has beautiful natural light colour and this colour can combine with every colour. As you can see in the below there is many various decorations that you can use rattan as a material.
When we used with warm colour like pink as you can see in the image below, it gives soft appearance. Also as you can see in the other image using with cool colour such as blue, looks more conspicuous and outstanding. You can choose the style using rattan with different colours.

Overall, both materials are environmentally friendly and sustainable materials to use. For this reason I will use these materials and their derivations in my project.
