Art Portfolio Two: Welcome Post

Welcome to my blog again..

We started a new term which this will be our last term. After completing the first and second terms, I feel like I have made a lot of progress since the beginning. I learned a lot of new information and improved my skills with different modules and help of my tutors. During this term, I would like to improve my drawing skills especially in perspective drawing. I learned more about perspective drawing during the second term, we did a workshop with our tutor Sam and I researched and practiced perspective drawing. And to be honest I improved myself compared to the beginning however, I'm still not where I want to be. I still have shortcomings in this regard and I want to focus on this in this term. Additionally, I want to learn more about materials and sustainability, colour theory, different design styles and being functional in design. Finally, I want to use my time more properly in this term. I struggled so much with timing last term, I couldn't finalise my idea so I started so late to my design. I had to finish some of the works in last minute and this affected my work. For this term, I am going to follow my time plan week by week so I am not gonna stress out in last weeks and my final work will be better than second term, I hope. I definitely need to manage my time very well to achieve these goals.

I also want to learn how to use other software that I can use while completing my project. I want to use coohom software for digital 3D design. Additionally, I want to create a physical 3D model so that I can use some skills that I learned in workshops. This will help me to understand using  different materials in my project and how it will fit into physical model. 

During this break I started learning crocheting which I wanted to learn for a long time. I watched some tutorial videos in YouTube and find some simple and basic object to start. I learned different patterns and stitching styles. Before I started making objects, I did some practice. I found little bow making tutorial video and made some little bow. I found this crocheting stress relieving and started doing and learning in my free time. Then I wanted to make some little objects for keychain crochets. I found tutorials for each one and started to spend more time doing these crochets. Then I wanted to make a small knit purse. Then I did this small purse which is big enough to fit my phone and wallet. I made some mistakes while making the purse, sometimes I had to untie some rows but I had fun and I'm happy with results. I also started doing crochet mesh sweater after finishing these but I had to start over third times and my yarn wasn't in right size so I decided to do it later. Overall, I really liked doing crochet this is my new hobby now, I'm crocheting in bus too while coming to school and I will definitely keep doing crocheting. 

 

INITIAL IDEAS GENERATION

For my individual brief I have to redesign the breakout areas in Art Factory building which on the ground floor and first floor. I will find out the floor plan and I am gonna design with real dimensions. I will make a usable space for students and definitely think about the health and safety rules and design is gonna be in contemporary style. I will design break out spaces to fit multiple purposes such as study, rest and play for students. As this building is for art and design students I wanna add some arts and paintings through the space so students can enjoy , relax and inspire by the artworks all over the space.

For the initial ideas inspiration we took some words from the bucket and think about how can we connect the word and the design we are gonna do. First I chose 'slash' word. As I am redesigning the breakout spaces that I thought I can design a couch when I chose slash. I draw a couch with the back is a little backward so people can lay their back and relax. The purpose of this couch was designing more comfortable and stylish. Then I made another drawing which was a coffee table. Legs in cross shape which consist of two slashes in opposite directions. 

Next word that I chose was 'overlap'. When I chose the word I confused a little bit and my tutors helped me and gave the idea of overlapping colours. Then I thought that I can made a overlapped colours with stained glass. First I drew a lamp with different colours of pieces with stained glass. When the lights go on different colours will overlap each other and create a beautiful mixture of colours like rainbow. Then I made different version of this lamp because I didn't like the first one it was quick and I didn't think a lot on this. Then I drew a table lamp with flower motifs made of stained glass. It can be good a decoration and it can be a wall lamp also so the light will reflect on wall and made a good appearance. Another idea for overlap was designing a vase with stained glass. It can be with different colours or also with monochromatic colours and these are gonna make great combinations. 

Other word that I chose was 'shadows'. I couldn't find anything related with shadows. I thought that I can make different shaped shadows with different types of windows or glass ceiling. I had this idea but I couldn't find a way to show it on paper  and the windows in the break out space were too small for this thought and I can't remove to roof and make a glass ceiling so I thought another idea. Plants can make a wonderful shadow display on the wall with natural sunlight. Placing the plant near to window or facing to window will be make a great display on wall like wallpaper. It is a good decoration idea for the relaxing spaces it will turn the environment into a spacious and natural place.

Last word that I chose was 'wrap'. When I picked this word I can make a wrapped shaped sitting area. I wanted to design more private areas for students to relax, eat, study and play. I drew the sofas like 'S' shape. Then I added the tables and chairs in opposite directions to protect the privacy. Sofas will be little higher than normal sofas so people will not see each other in opposite directions. They will be more comfortable in this way and also they will be able to study without distracted by others. I can also extend the sofas in empty spaces in design and more people can sit on sofas and still they will have some privacy because it is shaped like 'S'. Additionally, I believe that this design will save some space in place so I can fit more things in place. In conclusion, the main idea of this design is creating more private spaces for students and save some space in area. 

After finishing the sketches we swap our drawing with our classmates and chose one drawing to develop. Me and Lukasz swapped our sketches and described to each other then we chose one sketch to develop for each other. We chose the 'wrap' idea for Lukasz to develop. He drew some different sketches that I can develop from. He showed me different shapes that I can design like four table design so I can fit more place to sit. Also he drew sitting place with wall and this will give more privacy to people. I liked the idea with wall it is like a small room and it gives more privacy. I might use different material for wall around the sofas thinner and shorter than wall size so it is not gonna block the field of view. 

Briefly, I liked the ideas of wrapped sofas and overlapped colours in lamp and I can develop these ideas in future. I will improve these designs when I decided to my colour palette, materials and overall space plan so I can fit into space.
